The Essential Skill
A dull knife is a dangerous knife. It requires more pressure, slips more often, and doesn’t do what you need it to do.
What You Need
- A whetstone (or diamond stone)
- Honing oil or water
- A leather strop (optional)
The Technique
1. Find the Angle
Most pocket knives sharpen best at 15-20 degrees. Hold the blade against the stone and raise the spine until you feel the edge contact.
2. Use Consistent Strokes
Push the blade across the stone as if you’re trying to shave a thin layer off. Maintain the angle throughout.
3. Alternate Sides
Work one side, then the other. Equal strokes on each side keeps the edge centered.
